Growth Regulation by Organic Compounds.

چکیده
A large and diverse group of organic compounds is reported to "regulate" plant growth. Many of the determinations of growth regulation, however, do not measure the accelerating effects on growth but the inhibition of growth or toxicity effects. Such evidence does not suffice to identify the substances as growth regulators which may either accelerate or inhibit the growth process depending upon their concentration. Many techniques exist for the quantitative determination of the acceleration of plant growth by organic compounds (4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17,). Of these the straight growth of Avena coleoptile sections has distinct advantages. This test gives quantitative data on growth response, it enables the study of accessory factors involved in the growth process, it is sensitive to the effects of substances which do not cause an Avena curvature response, and it does not depend on the complicated series of reactions of the pea test. This study was made to determine the similarity of the effects of several organic compounds and the plant auxin, indoleacetic acid (20), on the straight growth of Avena coleoptile sections. Most of the compounds have been studied by other investigators but their results cannot be correlated satisfactorily because of the different techniques employed in the measurement of the growth effects.

Long- and short-distance signaling in the regulation of lateral plant growth
Lateral growth of shoot and root axes by the formation of secondary vascular tissues is an instructive example for the plasticity of plant growth processes. Being purely postembryonic, lateral growth strongly depends on environmental input and is tightly regulated by long- and short-distance signaling. In general, plant vasculature represents the main route for long-distance transport of compou...
متن کاملPlant Growth Promotion by Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Bacillus subtilis SYST2
Bacterial volatiles play a significant role in promoting plant growth by regulating the synthesis or metabolism of phytohormones. In vitro and growth chamber experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the plant growth promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus subtilis strain SYST2 on hormone regulation and growth promotion in tomato plants. We ...
متن کاملFusarium Oxysporum Volatiles Enhance Plant Growth Via Affecting Auxin Transport and Signaling
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have well-documented roles in plant-plant communication and directing animal behavior. In this study, we examine the less understood roles of VOCs in plant-fungal relationships. Phylogenetically and ecologically diverse strains of Fusarium oxysporum, a fungal species complex that often resides in the rhizosphere of assorted plants, produce volatile compounds th...
متن کاملRole of the GacS Sensor Kinase in the Regulation of Volatile Production by Plant Growth-Promoting Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25
In plant-associated Pseudomonas species, the production of several secondary metabolites and exoenzymes is regulated by the GacS/GacA two-component regulatory system (the Gac-system). Here, we investigated if a mutation in the GacS sensor kinase affects the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in P. fluorescens SBW25 (Pf.SBW25) and how this impacts on VOCs-mediated growth promotion a...
متن کاملAnalysis of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted by Plant Growth-Promoting Fungus Phoma sp. GS8-3 for Growth Promotion Effects on Tobacco
We extracted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by a plant growth-promoting fungus (PGPF) Phoma sp. GS8-3 by gas chromatography and identified them by mass spectrometry. All of the identified compounds belonged to C4-C8 hydrocarbons. Volatiles varied in number and quantity by the culture period of the fungus (in days). 2-Methyl-propanol and 3-methyl-butanol formed the main components of ...
